Karner Blue Butterfly

I created the entire piece, including the glass leaf. I took a class to make the glass leaf. I made the butterfly with blue and gold wire and a black metal binder paper clip. I also made the flowers with beads and wire. I wrapped a lot of wire. This piece took awhile, but it turned out pretty well.

The Karner Blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis) is dependent on the wild blue lupine flower (Lupinus perennis) to lay its eggs on and as food for its larvae. The Karner Blue butterfly and the blue lupine flower are found, along with many other rare and unique plant and animal species, in oak barrens also called savannas, oak-pine barrens, dry sand prairies, and other open areas with sandy soil. These habitats are some of the rarest natural systems in the world, having slowly declined and becoming degraded since European settlement. Loss of these habitats is due to fire suppression efforts, incompatible land uses, and, most recently, human development. The loss of suitable habitat resulted in a rapid decline in population numbers and extirpation of large populations across its range, and prompted its listing as a federally endangered species.
